On 06 April, a festive day for Hindus, while waiting for traffic to clear on Shogi – Tara Devi – Mehli ( Simla ) road axis I watched a group of Himalayan griffons gracefully soaring through the azure sky, I was struck by their serene presence. These magnificent birds appeared completely at ease, scanning the earth below while effortlessly riding the currents of air. Their impressive wingspans and streamlined bodies created a harmonious ballet, as they glided and danced with the eddies of the atmosphere, relishing the vastness of their aerial domain.

I marveled at their ability to hover in midair, achieved with subtle adjustments of their wings and necks. With their powerful talons tucked neatly against their bodies, they circled in both clockwise and counterclockwise patterns, showcasing their remarkable agility. It was a thrilling moment to witness these raptors display their aerial prowess, a testament to their adaptation to the high-altitude environment of the Himalayas.

However, the tranquility of this scene was abruptly shattered when I noticed one griffon suddenly veering toward a valley below. In a tragic turn of events, the bird collided with high-voltage power lines. A flash of light and a deafening crack echoed through the air as the majestic creature plummeted into the forest, a victim of electrical shock.

This incident serves as a stark reminder that even the most majestic birds, soaring freely in the open sky, face significant dangers closer to the ground.
